Wide Gate For Defcon In Black Opal

Peter and Paul Snowden have a decision to make after Defcon drew a wide gate for Sunday’s Mercedes-Benz Canberra Black Opal Stakes at Canberra.

The boom colt has gate 11 in the field of 13 for the Group 3 race for two-year-olds over 1200 metres.

Defcon is also an acceptor for the UNSW Todman Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, where his stablemate Capitalist is also entered.

Defcon has been a boom juvenile since scoring a dominant win in an early season barrier trial in Sydney.

He has raced twice for second placings at Group level in the Canonbury Stakes and Silver Slipper Stakes.

Unbeaten Queensland colt Dieters is a confirmed Black Opal runner after he didn’t accept for the Todman.

The Jason McLachlan-trained two-year-old has won both of his starts at Doomben and drew gate eight with Daniel Griffin to ride.

Prized Icon has also drawn towards the outside of the line, the James Cumming-trained colt landing in gate 10.

Prized Icon has placed at all three of his career runs including twice at Listed level and will be ridden by Hugh Bowman.

Recent winner Echappe from the Randwick stable of John Sargent drew the inside stall with Lightning Ridge Plate winner Super Too in three for Marc Conners — but both fillies are also acceptors for the Reisling Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

The local hopes include Motime for Gratz Vella, Fox Tales for Nick Olive and Balonne for Keith Dryden.
