Provincial Championship title comes to Canberra

An enviable win has certainly put Canberra on the map for the Provincial Championships with a 1-3 finish on Saturday at Randwick.  The Keith Dryden/Scott Collings trained Ziganui finished fast in third place, but it was Phillip Courtney’s Maryore that stunned the crowd with a blistering finish to take out the Provincial Championships.

Maryore, a magic millions purchase had raced in Adelaide at the start of her career for 3 wins until owners decided to bring her to Canberra, attracted by better prize money and racing.

Part-owner Joe Palombi, in preparation for Maryore and others arrival, redeveloped a stable complex in Canberra which now houses the boutique training stables of Phillip Courtney.

In anticipation, Courtney is waiting for the 4yo mares new benchmark from Racing NSW which will map a path for the mare’s next start.  “I am definitely keen for her to start in a Listed race” he said.

The biggest win of his career, Courtney and his wife Debbie, who rides Maryore’s trackwork celebrated with owners over dinner. “It was a quite affair, but hopefully we have a few more”

The mare has travelled home well, and she could have gone around again today” he said.
