Canberra Cup Transfer

The Canberra Racing Club has moved to create a “Super Sunday” Race Day by transferring the $200,000 Canberra Cup race onto the Kamberra Wine Company Black Opal Stakes race program on Sunday 11 March next year.

The Canberra Racing Club Committee decided on the move at a meeting on Tuesday, a move which followed consultation with racing industry representatives.

Chairman Tim Olive said “It is a positive step towards reinforcing the Black Opal Stakes brand which is recognised throughout the country and the Board is excited about the prospect of growing the Kamberra Wine Company Black Opal Stakes day to even greater heights.

The cup move establishes four listed races on the Black Opal Stakes program including the Canberra Cup, the Black Opal Stakes, the National Sprint and the Canberra Guineas which was upgraded to listed status earlier this year. The move requires ratification by the Australian Pattern Committee who oversees the rankings of Group and Listed races in Australia however the Club anticipates that this will be approved.

Four listed races on the one program is unprecedented in Canberra and is expected to improve the overall quality of racing on Black Opal Stakes day.

The current sponsor of the Canberra Cup is Canprint Communications, General Manager Sam Holden said” the move to Black Opal Stakes day works for us, it creates a more significant day that can be developed for interstate visitors especially in conjunction with the many national attractions in Canberra.”

Black Opal Stakes day will be developed to provide patrons with an exciting race day experience and over the next few months the Club will develop a plan to deliver the revamped race day.

Chief Executive Peter Stubbs said “The Club will allocate considerable resources to ensuring that Black Opal Stakes day is an exciting and vibrant race day experience for Canberrans and we will be working closely with outside organisations including Canberra Tourism to achieve this result. The whole Club is excited about the prospect of developing a plan to deliver our greatest race day ever.”
