Gai & Nash Target Canberra Cup
By Simon Dinopoulos
The Sydney combination of Gai Waterhouse and Nash Rawiller looks set to contest this year’s Canberra Cup, with the Group 1 winning trainer indicating they could have multiple nominations in the feature race.
Six – year old Stratofortress looks poised to be a leading contender in the listed race after its impressive barrier trial win at Randwick on Friday.
After taking out the Newcastle Cup in September, the son of Stravinsky has only had a slight let up since, and will be looking to continue on from his good form.
Both Kontiki Park and Devils Arcade will also join their stablemate as likely nominations for the Canberra Cup with both horses competing in next Friday’s Gosford Cup in the lead up to the race.
Although yet to notch up a win over further than 1600 metres, Kontiki Park has been racing in good form and hasn’t been far away in his recent outings beaten only a length last start at Rosehill over 2400 metres.
Returning from her spell in good order, the lightly raced Devil’s Arcade recently finished fourth in the $150,000 listed Herald Sun Stakes at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.
Having had only eight starts for five wins and two minor placings, Devil’s Arcade is working up nicely to her preferred distance range after she won over 1800m at just her third start and is highly regarded by the Waterhouse stable.
