Black Opal Stakes 2017

The Club celebrated a fantastic day of racing on the Group 3 Mercedes-Benz Canberra Black Opal Stakes day with quality fields and a great atmosphere enjoyed by all who attended the track.

The Mercedes-Benz Canberra Black Opal was won by Trapeze Artist, trained by Gerald Ryan who has shot up the Golden Slipper order of entry to 7th after collecting the $165,000 first prize cheque. At the time of print there were reports that the owners will pay the $150,000 late nomination fee for a start in the Golden Slipper on Sautrday week. Ridden by Tim Clark, the hoop also claimed victory in the tab.com.au Canberra Cup on Dark Eye’s for the Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott partnership.

For full race replays you can visit the Thoroughbred Park website, under the racing information page.

Single Gaze aiming for the Coolmore Classic

Nick Olive-trained Single Gaze has pleased the stable since her first-up run and will go into Saturdays Group 1 2017 Coolmore Classic (1500m) in tip-top condition and has drawn an ideal position in barrier 5.

Olive says Single Gaze did everything that could have been asked of her resuming over 1300m in the 2017 Group 2 Millie Fox and the longer trip suits.

Single Gaze had trialled very well at Canberra prior behind Matt Dale–trained sprinter Fell Swoop.

In March 2016, Single Gaze took out the Group 2 2016 Arrowfield Classic (1600m) and Kembla Grange on the slow, before winning the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.

There was plenty of stable confidence about the mare’s chances in the Group 1 2016 Australian Oaks (2400m) following, but she clipped heals and fell and was given a long break.
