Mercurial Lad Heads To The Wagga Guineas

The Barbara Joseph-Paul Jones-trained Mercurial Lad took another leap winning the TAB.com.au Highway Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.

The up-and-coming Canberra galloper responded to the gear changes to record a strong on-speed performance and will now go on to the Wagga Guineas in two weeks time.

Mercurial Lad had won his previous two races but had run off the track and trialled to the steward’s satisfaction in the new gear at the Sapphire Coast prior to the Randwick run.

The stable has always had an opinion of the Pendragon 3YR old and says he’s still got improvement to come.

The major challenge has been to get him to run straight.

Stablemate Just A Blur is still on track for the Wagga Town Plate which she won last year.

Just A Blur was not suited by the heavy surface and racing pattern at Randwick on the same day and is ticking along well according to the stable.
