The Kamberra Wine Company Black Opal Stakes is Canberra's premiere race day. The inaugural Black Opal Stakes in 1973 was won by Rich Reward. Now, in it's 37th year, the day is one of the more important Autumn race days on the calendar and for the first time the Black Opal Stakes day program includes the Canberra Cup. The eight race program now includes four Listed races on the days program including; the $250,000 Kamberra Wine Company Black Opal Stakes (Listed), the $200,000 Mercedes Benz (Canberra) Canberra Cup (Listed), $100,000 National Sprint (Listed) and the $100,000 Affinity Construction Management Canberra Guineas (Listed). Race nominations for all races close on Tuesday 6th March 2012 at 11am, the full racing program is available under the racing drop down menu.
The action takes place both on and off the track at Thoroughbred Park on Black Opal Stakes day. Enter the Myer Fashions on the Field competition for the best prizes in the region. Please note that the Fashions on the Field competition has strict guidelines for each category entry. Categories are Classic Ladies Racewear, Classic Mens Racewear, Classic Couples Racewear and the Millinery Award. Parking
Public car parking - $5 (proceeds to Rotary Club of ACT).
Public Transport
ACTION Buses will operate throughout the course of the day, stopping directly out the front of the racecourse on Randwick Road. ACTION route 956 will operate from Belconnen and Civic along its usual route, with a detour down Randwick Road for racegoers. Free shuttle services to Dickson and Civic will operate on a loop after the races from 5pm to 7:30pm.
Important Information
Please note that NO alcohol can be brought through the gates and Thoroughbred Park reserves the right to conduct bag searches. Patrons can bring a picnic lunch with them to eat on the lawns or one of the many open areas. Thoroughbred Park is a non-smoking venue.
