Hat-trick of Highways

Matt Dale will start Autumn in the TAB Highway at Rosehill on Saturday, and with luck may win his third Highway Handicap in a row.  Autumn, who won first up impressively at Canberra has drawn an awkward barrier, but Dale says she should be competitive. She is looking for more distance, although winning previously over 1200m, the additional 200 metres should suit her.

Dale will also start Hermosa Beach in the Helen Coughlan Stakes at Doomben and says she needs a lot of luck from the wide barrier.  “She is less suited at Doomben on the dry track than she was at Eagle Farm” he says, referring to the course swap.  “She has been relishing the new surroundings over the past three weeks and enjoying the sun, and she will stay for another fortnight to race in the Gai Waterhouse fillies and mares over 1350m in a fortnights time, regardless of tomorrow’s outcome”.

Along with Hermosa Beach, a Canberra contingent of trainers have sent competitive horses to the Doomben track including Nick Olive’s Single Gaze, who starts in the Group 2 P J O’Shea Stakes, The Provincial Championships winner Maryore trained by Philip Courtney in the Listed Spear Chief Handicap and Gary Kirkup has two-time Camarena Open Quality winner Highly Geared in the Listed Amgrow Lightning Handicap.
