Fell Swoop Spelling — TJ Smith Stakes Next Target — Matt Dale

Star Canberra sprinter Fell Swoop pulled up well from his tough placing in the 2016 Group 1 Darley Classic at Flemington and has gone to the paddock.

Canberra trainer Matt Dale says he will now map out a plan for Fell Swoop into the 2017 TJ Smith Stakes Group 1 at Randwick third-up.

“He showed on Saturday that he’s effective up the Flemington straight so that allows us to look at races like the Lightening and the Newmarket into the TJ,” Dale says.

“And there’s also the option of the Oakleigh Plate and the Galaxy as well into the TJ.

“So we have lots of choice about how we get there, but we are looking third-up into the TJ.”

Dale was delighted with Fell Swoop’s performance in the Darley Classic.

“He had to race without cover into a brutal headwind and I thought his effort was sensational.”

Dale had Fell Swoop and Rocket Commander competing at the Flemington Spring Carnival and from six runs recorded five Group placings.

He says Rocket Commander has also gone to the paddock after an unplaced effort in Saturday’s 2016 Matriarch Stakes Group 2 at Flemington - stepping up to a middle distance.

“We will also map out an autumn programme for Rocket Commander.

"The question mark with her on Saturday was the trip and she had to be used up a bit from the wide gate and it’s a long 2000m there at Flemington.”
