Defcon Wins Black Opal Stakes
Defcon has overcome a poor start to produce a swooping victory in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes at Canberra.
Sent out as odds-on favourite, there were nervous moments early as Defcon was slow away from his wide draw.
Jockey Blake Shinn remained calm aboard the son of Choisir as the pair gradually tacked on to the rear of the field and then plotted the widest course of the runners around the home turn.
Widest down the Canberra straight, Defcon let down strongly to record an impressive win over outsider Flash Fibian.
“He just had a bit on them,” Snowden said.
“He travelled well and produced a sterling turn of foot. He has always had that great acceleration; it was just a matter of timing it right.
“A great turn of foot will take them a long way and win them races.”
Snowden is unsure of whether Defcon will head towards the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes although the colt has firmed from $26 to $15 with tab.com.au.
“We’ll let the dust settle, enjoy the moment and see what happens.”
He is also quoted at $11 for the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick a fortnight later.
Defcon provided jockey Blake Shinn with a winning double for the program having also won aboard Trick Star in the opening event of the program.
While Trick Star enjoyed a dream run outside the lead, Shinn and Defcon had to do it tough after his slow start.
“When the barriers opened my heart sunk,” Shinn said.
“Before the race I thought I was on a good thing in the race and when the gates opened I thought I was no chance.
“I had to have faith in the horse and be very patient. They went fast in front and I know he has got a devastating turn of foot.
“I got a good enough drag into the race from Tye Angland (Flash Fibian), I produced him at the 250m and he was explosive.
“He is a very smart two-year-old, he has got form lines around Astern.”
